The mission of the Mouse Genetics Service is to provide a state of the art environment for research with laboratory mice.
The Service provides two facilities in which laboratory mice are maintained and bred for different research programs. We are committed to apply the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) and pay particular attention to ensure animal welfare. Two Veterinarians specialized in Laboratory Animal Science and Medicine provide for animal well-being and highly trained personnel is involved in the animal care and breeding activities. Animal care, breeding and experimental procedures are done in accordance with the Decreto legislativo 4 marzo 2014, n. 26, which enforces the Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. Cogentech animal facilities are fully authorized by the Italian Ministry of Health.
The animal facilities are fully equipped with Individually Ventilated Cages (IVC) providing an ideal environment both for the animals and for the operators. IVC cages are designed to prevent the spread of microorganisms from the cages to the surrounding area (biocontainment), and preclude the entrance of particles/microorganisms from the surrounding area into the cages (bioexclusion). Environmental enrichment is provided in each cage with a Mouse House™ (Tecniplast), which provides a complex three-dimensional environment and a soft sawdust bedding which allows nesting activities.
All the activities are carried out in accordance to the detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The facility is UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 certified. The staff is composed by highly trained personnel, always involved in continuous education and training.
Mice are housed in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with individually ventilated cages (IVCs). This service includes:
